SPL - Sailplane Pilot Licence FAQ
-
The SPL is the Sailplane Pilot Licence. It permits non-commercial flying without remuneration within your privileges. Other operations require the additional age and experience conditions in SFCL.115. Qualified instructors and examiners may be paid for activities allowed by their certificates. Passenger carriage, launch methods and TMG flying have their own requirements.
-
Complete the required SPL course at an approved training organisation (ATO) or declared training organisation (DTO); a club may provide training if it has the appropriate status. Meet the applicable medical requirements before solo flight. The minimum age for a first solo sailplane flight is 14, and for SPL issue it is 16.
-
SPL theoretical knowledge covers nine subjects: Air Law, Aircraft General Knowledge, Flight Performance and Planning, Human Performance and Limitations, Meteorology, Navigation, Operational Procedures, Principles of Flight and Communications. The competent authority sets the examination arrangements. Use the app for subject practice and timed mock exams alongside your training course.
-
Launch method(s), circuits and landings, use of thermals/ridge/ wave, abnormal procedures and emergency handling with an examiner.
-
For self-launch, TMG, towing or instruction you’ll need extra training/endorsements as defined by regulation.
-
Only in permitted airspace and sites, observing local airspace design, NOTAMs and operational limitations.
-
For sailplanes other than TMGs, SFCL.160 normally requires five hours of flight time, including 15 launches and two training flights with an FI(S), within the preceding 24 months, or a proficiency check. TMG privileges have separate requirements: 12 hours, including six hours on TMGs, 12 take-offs and landings, and a one-hour training flight, or a proficiency check. Passenger carriage additionally requires three recent launches, or three TMG take-offs and landings, within 90 days; at night in a TMG, at least one must have been at night. Applicable exemptions, passenger-eligibility and launch-method requirements must also be met.
Prepare for your EASA SPL theory exams in English with QuizVDS. Work through sailplane practice questions by subject, then use timed tests to check your understanding.
The question bank covers Air Law, Aircraft General Knowledge, Flight Performance and Planning, Human Performance and Limitations, Meteorology, Navigation, Operational Procedures, Principles of Flight and Communications, with principles of flight and aircraft knowledge relevant to sailplane operations.
Review incorrect answers and return to the subjects that need more work. Combine practice with your training organisation's course materials and instructor guidance. Exam arrangements follow the requirements of the competent authority.
